Mixed media on canvas, 2022. 40” x 30”
The heavy black lines that appear to section off the areas of the canvas were inspired by my love of maps. Though the art is abstract, the lines are reminiscent of city map lines.
Just as cities and towns are sectioned off by neighborhoods, so our lives can be bound by borders and boundaries that separate us from others.
This piece reflects my philosophy that borders do not have to be impermeable barriers. Beyond the boundaries, we are all connected by our common humanity. Our shared vulnerability and imperfection generate compassion for one another.
If you look closely, you will see that the paint marks spill over the black lines, making the connections visible even if not obvious. And the heavy yarn that hangs outside the frame includes all the hues on the canvas.
We are connected to each other, to everything in our environment, and to our collective and individual histories. We cannot escape our connections. And that’s a good thing.
