“Through Line for Transformation”

Suzanne Scott Constantine and
Lynne Scott Constantine, 2020
mixed media assemblage on birch wood blocks, 16″ x 20″ x 3″

(Suzanne) I began creating the base for this collaborative piece by covering a Masonite board with paper and painting it with multiple layers of acrylic paint, then outlining them in darker colors and adding twigs. The abstract design could be the view of a map from above, a river and a forest, or pathways formed by travel. On top of the blue portion of the backdrop are 3”x3” wood blocks with photographic transfers of hands, reaching. Lynne created the wood transfers as well as the wood transfer of the maritime forest at the top of the frame. The concept undergirding this artwork is that no matter where life takes us, we are connected to each other and to the land and water by nature’s lines.
(Lynne) Flows of water, roads and paths become transformative when the human hand reaches out, shapes, and connects. To the base image created by Suzanne, I contributed these hands, which I made by transferring digital images of my own hands to birch blocks.
