Mixed media on cradle board and hardboard, 2024. 20” x 53”
This work was inspired by the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, by my love of maps, and by my memories of childhood road trips. The poem’s last stanza is especially poignant for me because it represents a profound decision point in my life more than four decades ago.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –
I took the one less traveled by,
And it has made all of the difference.
And the learning continues: the choices never end. My personal narrative continues to intersect with new history revealed. I make new choices. New discoveries. New insights. I am forever an observer and a contributor. The abstracted roads and map lines are metaphors. Who among us has not been faced with the kind of choice that changes the direction of our lives and the lives of everyone in our orbit?
