According to one tradition of Jewish mysticism, the world was created when divine light was poured into vessels not strong enough to contain it. When the vessels shattered, stray light formed our world and its inhabitants, while the vessels’ shards became all the wicked problems we face. The shattering of the vessels made our world possible; but our duty, and our chance for personal and community transformation, is to be part of the ongoing repair of the world.
