“Leap of Flame”

Here I imagine the process by which the Phoenix leaves its old form behind and becomes new. Even the form of the flame rising undergoes transformation—from a plume shape to a heart shape to a wing shape to a memory. The new Phoenix is not visible yet, but the heart shape and wing shape promise that what matters will return.

The leap image is a composite of stills from a video I made of “flying wish paper,” which replaced the Amaretti that no longer would go airborne. The wing and heart are stills from the same sequence. All three images have had some ink lines added to make the outlines clearer.
