What are the touchstones of ordinary life that we love and want to save? Here I imagine new metaphors in the ritual of dinner at the family table.
The place setting is a broken cup and a broken bowl, each repaired via kintsugi. The crepe myrtle blossoms are past their peak, but still lovely. The silverware is old and a little worn but elevated by a simple tablecloth and a pretty (if imperfect) placemat.
We don’t need the perfect environment to engage in loving rituals; all we need is a sense of what’s important to us, a little imagination, and a little patience.
